Why is My HVAC System Noisy?

Why is My HVAC System Noisy?

Your home HVAC equipment is one of the most important pieces of equipment in your property.

Your home HVAC equipment is one of the most important pieces of equipment in your property. Whether it is escaping from the freezing Canadian winters or getting respite from the summer heat, your HVAC system makes sure that you stay comfortable at all times. But if your HVAC system suddenly starts to become noisy, it can be quite a frightening thought. Your first impulse might be to conclude that the system is breaking down and you are looking at a huge replacement or repair cost. Although there is no doubt that regular servicing and inspection by a professional HVAC technician can help you eliminate such occurrences, there will still be times when your HVAC system may act up. Your HVAC system making noise can be due to many reasons. Here are a few examples:

Rattling

There could be a few reasons why there is a rattling noise coming out of your HVAC system. If you observe that there is a rattling noise coming from the outdoor unit, you may possibly have some kind of debris in the system. This includes some fallen twigs or leaves which may have got stuck in the system. Although most larger debris is protected by the grate, it is still possible for smaller leaves and twigs to enter your system. To get rid of any possible debris, turn off your HVAC system and disconnect the power supply to the unit. After you have removed the debris, check if you can see any visible damage to the coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils. You can also think about calling your technician instead of opening the system yourself. If the rattling sound seems to originate from the internal part of the HVAC system like from the furnace or any other internal component, turn off the HVAC system and call your technician as getting rid of internal obstacles may not be simple.

Hissing

If you hear a hissing sound from your HVAC system, you can conclude that there is some air escaping from your system. Listen to where the noise is coming from. If the noise is from the walls, it is probably because the ducts are leaking. Such a leak can cause significant wastage of money as the air must ideally be circulating throughout your home rather than leaking into walls.

If a slight hissing sound is coming from your vents, the chances are that it is originating from the HVAC air vents. Typically a wrongly set filter or wrong sized filters create such hissing sounds. The best fix for this is to ensure that the filter is set at the right size and is placed correctly with no gaps. However, all these corrections must be performed by a technician so that no further damage or breakdown occurs.
